Archangelos Dance Program Marks 26 Years of Cultural Excellence and Tradition

PORT WASHINGTON, NY: . – The Archangelos Dance Program of the Archangel Michael Church in Port Washington, NY, under the inspired direction of Mrs. Zaharoula Zogopoulos, joyously celebrated its 26th anniversary with a captivating annual recital, followed by a spirited and memorable glendi, May 3.

Five dynamic groups of dancers, ranging in age from four to eighteen, graced the stage with traditional dances from the storied regions of Samos, Ikaria, Epirus, Kos, and Kastoria. Their performances were brought to vibrant life by the acclaimed ensemble Endasi, whose authentic sounds transported the audience straight to the heart of Greece. More than 300 families, friends, and devoted supporters gathered to revel in this extraordinary celebration of Hellenic culture.

Founded in 1999 with just a handful of dancers, the Archangelos Dance Program has blossomed into one of the premier Greek folk dance ministries in the Northeast. Today, it proudly serves over 150 young dancers, each one immersed in a curriculum that goes far beyond steps and rhythms. At Archangelos, dance becomes a portal to the soul of Greece— its geography, history, and the timeless stories embedded in each song.

At the helm of this cultural mission, Mrs. Zogopoulos devotes herself not only to instruction, but also to deep scholarly exploration. Each year, she travels throughout Greece, engaging directly with village communities to study their living traditions. Her research enriches the program’s offerings and ensures that the spirit of authentic Greek dance is passed down with integrity and reverence.

The dancers of Archangelos have proudly showcased their talents at prestigious events across the country, including the Hellenic Dance Festival of the Metropolis of Atlanta, the Faith Dance Fellowship of the Metropolis of San Francisco, and Parathosi, presented by the Archdiocese of New York.

This milestone celebration would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the community’s beloved presiding priest Fr. John Lardas, the Parish Council, Mrs. Helen Bapis, the talented instructors Mrs. Annamaria Fazio, Mrs. Maria Mouzakitis, Mrs. Anthi Tsismenakis, and the many dedicated volunteers whose tireless efforts breathe life into their shared vision. Their commitment continues to sustain the program’s mission- to preserve and celebrate the richness of Hellenic heritage for generations to come.
