Chios fire causes limited damage to St. George historic church and Volissos castle

The fire in northern Chios caused minor damage to the Byzantine church of St George and the Castle of Volissos, according to a statement from the Ministry of Culture. Specifically, the large fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon in northern Chios caused limited damage to the area surrounding the church of St. George in Prastia, located between Sidirounta and Volissos. Restoration work on the area around the monument will begin on Monday by the Ephorate of Antiquities.
The Byzantine Castle of Volissos (11th century), also sustained limited damage. The Ministry of Culture has announced plans to proceed with immediate repairs.
