Personal number: Deadline for citizens to apply ends; automatic issuance from September 5

Athens, Greece.- Τhere are only a few days left for citizens who wish to issue their own Personal Number, which will accompany them from now on in all transactions with the public sector. Specifically, on Friday, September 5, anyone who has not yet obtained a Personal Number will automatically receive one from the system so that all Greek citizens have a unique identification number.
This number, which will gradually replace the multiple numbers currently in use, such as the Social Security Number (AMKA), the Tax Identification Number (AFM), and the identity number, will be automatically assigned in early
September to all those who have not yet applied for one. Citizens can issue their Personal Number at gov.gr after confirming their identification data as kept in the public registries.
In case a correction is required in any of their identification data, they fill in or select the correct entry within the application, and the corresponding register is automatically updated.
They will also need their personal Taxisnet credentials after registering with the National Contact Register (EMEP) to confirm their mobile phone number.
They must then select two of the three alphanumeric digits that will be added as a prefix to their Taxisnet number to form their Personal Number. They can then follow the same process for their minor dependents.
The Personal Number is issued once to each individual, is unique, and cannot be changed. By adopting the Personal Number, the government aims to upgrade digital governance, facilitating transactions and citizen identification, while increasing security and protection of personal data in an ever-evolving digital environment.
