The eurosystem is ready to speed up the introduction of a digital euro, BoG governor says

The eurosystem is ready to accelerate the introduction of a digital euro once it is approved and the relative legislation adopted, Bank of Greece (BoG) governor Yannis Stournaras said at the Crypto-Research Conference at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens on Monday.

Stournaras said that a political discussion at the European Union on the legislative package on the digital euro will conclude shortly.

The e-coin will allow all citizens access to payments for retail payments, contributing to social inclusion. It will provide a secure and reliable alternative in retail payments and be always available, operating under strict and fully transparent rules of public supervision; it will create new innovation opportunities for banks and payment institutions; and it will support the continuity of financial transactions during crises or geopolitical irregularities, whenever the private payment networks are disturbed.

In any case, Stournaras said, central banks and the eurosystem are closely monitoring the use of cryptocurrency in payments but also acknowledge that retail money of central banks must also embrace new technologies and offer new, more attractive solutions to consumers.
