PM Mitsotakis with Google’s Vice President for Privacy & Security about protection of children and adolescents

The protection of children and adolescents from harmful or inappropriate content, as well as the strengthening of cooperation between the government and Google for this purpose, dominated Friday’s meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Google’s Vice President for Privacy and Security, Evan Kotsovinos, along with Eugenia Bozou, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Greece, Cyprus, and Malta, and other Google executives.

During the meeting, discussions also focused on the initiatives undertaken by Greece, both at the national and European level, for the protection of minors on the internet and the fight against digital addiction.

Among others, the development of KidsWallet was highlighted. This is the first state application that, on the one hand, allows parents to set limits on their children’s use of social media, and on the other hand, provides the ability to verify the user’s age.

It was emphasised that Greece has also taken the lead in the European dialogue on establishing a European digital age of majority and on the mandatory integration of parental control tools into all internet-connected devices-proposals that have been widely welcomed among EU member states.

Within this framework, Greece is one of the five countries selected to pilot the European age-verification system, which has already been integrated into KidsWallet and is scheduled to go live by the end of October.
