AADE hosts informational event in New York on tax obligations for Greeks living abroad

A well-attended informational event in New York brought together members of the Greek-American community for a comprehensive update on Greece’s evolving tax framework for non-residents. Held on December 10 and hosted by the Consulate General of Greece in collaboration with the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, the session featured a detailed presentation by Giorgos Pitsilis, Governor of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), accompanied by senior officials from the Authority.
The discussion focused on providing Greeks living abroad with clear guidance on their tax rights and obligations, while also outlining the broad reforms reshaping Greece’s tax administration. Governor Pitsilis emphasized that strengthening trust with the diaspora remains a top priority, and he highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to simplify procedures, increase transparency and expand digital access for taxpayers around the world. The presentation also showcased AADE’s new centralized service hubs designed to streamline processes and deliver more consistent support.

A major part of the event centered on the digital tools now available to non-residents. These include the upgraded myAADE platform, which enables fully online registration for a Greek Tax Identification Number as well as the submission of tax declarations and residence-transfer documentation. Attendees also learned about MIDAS, Greece’s unified digital property registry that consolidates all real-estate information into a single online file, and my1521, AADE’s real-time support service offering rapid assistance to individuals and businesses. Early results from these initiatives show faster response times, improved resolution rates and heightened user satisfaction.
An extended Q&A session allowed participants to raise practical and often complex matters affecting Greeks abroad. Among the issues discussed were the use of a Greek TIN, when tax obligations arise in Greece, ownership of property, tax residency criteria, the treatment of retirees with U.S. income, provisions for avoiding double taxation and the incentives available for those considering relocating their tax residency to Greece. The dialogue was constructive and clarified several areas that commonly cause uncertainty among expatriates.
For many attendees, the event served as an important bridge between Greece’s modernized tax administration and the diaspora. At a time when international mobility and cross-border income are increasingly common, access to accurate and immediately applicable information is essential. The speakers offered clarity on complex topics, while also presenting the digital infrastructure that is gradually making the system more accessible, transparent and user-friendly.
The Consulate General of Greece in New York and the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce extended their appreciation to the speakers and to the vibrant community that contributed to the success of this informative session.
