Απεβίωσε η πρώην διευθύντρια του «Αργυρίου Φάντη» /En.

Νέα Υόρκη.-  Η διακεκριμένη εκπαιδευτικός και διευθύντρια του Λυκείου Φορτ Χάμιλτον (Fort Hamilton High School) του Μπρούκλιν και συνάμα του Ημερήσιου Ελληνοαμερικανικού Σχολείου “Αργύριος Φάντης” της κοινότητας των Αγίων Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης του Μπρούκλιν, Δρ. Άλις Β. Φάρκουχ (Dr. Alice B. Farkouh) ανήμερα της Πρωτοχρονιάς (1^η Ιανουαρίου 2026) άφησε την τελευταία της πνοή σε ηλικία 86 ετών έχοντας στο πλευρό της τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια.

Η θλιβερή είδηση για την εκδημία της διακεκριμένης εκπαιδευτικού, διευθύντριας και μέντορα προκάλεσε θλίψη και συγκίνηση στην εκπαιδευτική κοινότητα, στους πρώην μαθητές και γονείς.

Βαθιά είναι η θλίψη και η οδύνη που προκάλεσε η εκδημία της τόσο στο Ημερήσιο Ελληνοαμερικανικό Σχολείου Αργύριος Φάντης όσο και στην κοινότητα του Καθεδρικού Ναού των Αγίων Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης του Μπρούκλιν.

Κι αυτό διότι η εκλιπούσα ανέλαβε τα καθήκοντά της ως διευθύντριας προ δύο περίπου δεκαετιών σε μια δύσκολη περίοδο και κατάφερε να ανατρέψει την φθίνουσα πορεία και να το οδηγήσει σε μια περίοδο αναγέννησης.

Οι διάδοχοί της αξιοποίησαν την κληρονομιά της κατάφεραν υπό την διεύθυνση του Θεόδωρου Τασούλα και την πνευματική καθοδήγηση του π. Ευαγόρα Κωνσταντινίδη να το μετατρέψουν σε ένα σχολείο μπουτίκ, σε ένα εκπαιδευτικό ίδρυμα αριστείας. Το μετέτρεψαν σε ένα πραγματικό διαμάντι της ομογένειας και του Μπρούκλιν και σήμερα εν έτη 2026 είναι το μοναδικό Ημερήσιο Ελληνοαμερικανικό Σχολείο, το οποίο αναγνωρίστηκε από το Ομοσπονδιακό Υπουργείο Παιδείας ως «National Blue Ribbon School».

Ο διευθυντής του «Αργυρίου Φάντη», κ. Θεόδωρος Τασούλας στο άκουσμα του θανάτου της Dr. Alice B. Farkouh απέστειλε την ακόλουθη επιστολή στους εκπαιδευτικούς, στους μαθητές, στους γονείς και στα μέλη της κοινότητας:

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Alice B. Farkouh, former Principal of A. Fantis School. Dr. Farkouh was a remarkable educator and leader whose influence is felt across generations of students and schools—including our own.

Dr. Farkouh was the kind of principal who made people stand taller. She led with clarity, high expectations, and genuine belief in young people. At Fort Hamilton High School, where she served as principal, she was widely recognized as a visionary who modernized the school and pushed it forward—championing major programs and facilities, guiding the community through serious challenges, and building a culture of pride and achievement.

Many in the Fort Hamilton community remember the milestones she helped bring to life: the construction of the natatorium, the establishment of programs that strengthened student leadership and belonging, the creation of new learning spaces, and the way she led through difficult moments with steadiness and resolve. She also reminded graduates, in words that still resonate, that no one should be told “you can’t do it.”

For Fantis, Dr. Farkouh’s legacy is deeply personal. Nearly 20 years ago, she stepped in during a pivotal chapter and helped stabilize and strengthen the school at a time when its future was far from guaranteed. She set a high bar for professionalism, student achievement, and long-term sustainability—and she helped lay the foundation for the work we have been able to continue and expand today.

Many in our community are also remembering Dr. Farkouh through the educators she mentored. Our Primary Dean, Ms. Kathy Noufrios, has shared that Dr. Farkouh was her dear friend and mentor:

“There are very few people in this world who truly shape who we become. Dr. Alice Farkouh was one of those people for me. She was my mentor, my guide, and the reason I am the teacher and leader I am today. She pushed me—pushed me hard—but always with purpose, always with honesty. ‘Never say you can’t!’ she would say. She was a strong woman, incredibly real, and she said things exactly as they were. From her, I learned that authenticity matters, that leading with truth and integrity is the only way to be… Dr. Farkouh was a true leader—one who led with her heart just as much as with her incredible mind… Her impact lives on through everyone she touched.”

In 2010, Dr. Farkouh shared her story in her memoir, Never Say You Can’t: Memoirs of a Lebanese-Syrian American Educator. The title reflected a formative lesson from her childhood: to bury the word “can’t.” In her own words: “The most important thing to remember is your roots, teaching your children basic values, and never giving up on your passion for what you truly believe in. Never say ‘I can’t do it.’”

That belief—grounded in roots, values, and perseverance—was not a slogan for Dr. Farkouh. It was a standard she lived, and it is why so many students and educators across New York City credit her with changing the trajectory of their lives.

On behalf of our Board, faculty, staff, and families, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Farkouh’s family, friends, and all who were taught, mentored, and inspired by her leadership.

May her memory be eternal.
