New York.— As the Hellenic community enters the New Year, preparations for the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City are moving forward with purpose, vision, and strong community engagement.
In a message shared with Federation members, parade participants, volunteers, and supporters, Lou Katsos, Chairman of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York Greek Independence Day Parade Committee, outlined the progress already made and the priorities ahead for what is expected to be a milestone commemorative year.

Extending warm wishes for health, peace, and prosperity, Katsos emphasized that the spirit of unity and dedication within the Greek American community continues well beyond the holiday season. He expressed sincere appreciation for the early commitment shown by committee members and volunteers, noting that their collective efforts are already shaping a parade year worthy of its historical significance.
From the beginning, Katsos explained, the shared objective has been to elevate the 2026 celebrations in a manner that honors both the legacy of the Greek War of Independence and the enduring democratic ideals that link Greece and the United States across generations.
As part of that vision, the Parade Committee has secured Cipriani 42nd Street as the venue for the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade Gala. The iconic Manhattan location was selected to reflect the gravity of the anniversary while embracing a forward-looking approach to this important year. Additional details regarding the Gala are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Preparations are progressing across multiple committees. According to Katsos, the Journal Committee and Raffles Committee have made strong headway, with information on journal participation and raffle distribution to be announced shortly. In addition, a series of events and activities leading up to the parade are currently being planned, each aimed at strengthening engagement, participation, and unity throughout the Hellenic diaspora.
The Parade Committee will resume its work with its first working meeting of the year scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026, bringing committee members together to finalize timelines and coordinate next steps. Public meetings are also in development, while the Federation awaits confirmation from the Archdiocese to schedule the annual Federation Vasilopita cutting, a meaningful tradition centered on blessing, fellowship, and renewal.
One of the most anticipated announcements of the commemorative year will be the naming of the Grand Marshals of the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade. Katsos confirmed that the Committee plans to select two organizations and two individuals by late January or early February. He expressed gratitude to those who have already submitted recommendations and encouraged additional submissions, noting that the chosen Grand Marshals are expected to serve as living bridges between past and present, Greece and America, and the values that continue to shape both nations.
As preparations continue, Katsos underscored that the work ahead extends beyond organizing a single parade.
Through cooperation, vision, and shared purpose, he emphasized, the Federation is helping shape a commemorative year that reflects the strength, pride, and enduring legacy of the Greek American communit
