Kikilias: Ten Greek ships with 85 Greek seafarers in the Persian Gulf

Maritime and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias referred to the importance and critical role of shipping amid wartime conflicts in an interview with SKAI TV on Monday.
Kikilias stressed that developments directly affect international shipping and, by extension, the global economy, explaining that approximately 20% of the world’s oil and 20% to 25% of natural gas pass through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting its significance and the potential impact on global economic activity.
He described the targeting of seafarers as unacceptable, emphasizing that ocean-going shipping should remain outside war conflicts-something that, unfortunately, is not confirmed by reality.
Regarding the presence of Greek shipping in the region, he said that 10 Greek-flagged vessels are currently in the Persian Gulf and five are outside it, while a total of around 325 vessels linked to Greece but flying foreign flags are in the wider area. He clarified that the 10 Greek ships have 85 Greek seafarers on board, who are safe and with whom there is constant communication, noting that the ministry’s Operations Room remains continuously on alert.
The minister underlined the need for composure and exceptional caution when making public statements, as both the duration and the degree of escalation of the crisis remain unknown. He warned that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have enormous economic repercussions for shipping and global trade, pointing out that all vessels still heading toward the region are staying outside the Strait.
In conclusion, he emphasized that the primary priority of the Greek government remains the protection of Greeks in the area.
