Cyprus: The national anniversary of 1 April 1955 – Trisagion at the tombs of the EOKA heroes

The national anniversary of 1 April 1955 was commemorated in Cyprus with festive doxologies and events.
At the Cathedral of the Apostle Barnabas in Nicosia, on Wednesday morning, a Festal Doxology was celebrated, presided over by His Beatitude Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the House of Representatives, Ms Annita Demetriou. The festive address of the day was delivered by Yiannis Lambrou, historian and author.
Subsequently, at the Imprisoned Graves, a Trisagion service was held at the tombs of the EOKA heroes who took part in the Liberation Struggle of 1955–59, followed by the laying of wreaths.
In his message for the national anniversary, Mr Christodoulides emphasised: “We have an obligation and a duty to speak to our children and to the younger generation about EOKA, about the struggles and sacrifices of all those who gave their lives for a better Cyprus, for the Republic of Cyprus. Because virtue and courage require deep knowledge, first and foremost, knowledge of oneself, that is, of one’s true history. And such knowledge in no way works against efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, since the viability of any potential solution depends to a great extent on respect for each person’s historical identity, and certainly not on self-negation.”
