Mitsotakis proposes incompatibility between the offices of minister and Member of Parliament

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proposed the introduction of an incompatibility clause to forbid holding the role of minister and also that of Member of Parliament after the 2027 elections, in a statement issued on Monday shortly after 11:00 in light of the OPEKEPE case.
In his message, the Greek prime minister emphasized that he is calling on the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, following the lifting of parliamentary immunity, to promptly determine whether prosecutions should be brought and, if so, against whom.
He further noted that he is striving to transform Greece into a modern European state, highlighting that digital modernization serves as a key tool in addressing both minor and more significant forms of corruption where human discretion is involved.
Describing the current moment as a turning point – a new starting point in the effort to confront the “deep state” – Mitsotakis underlined that New Democracy is evolving into a force for decisive reform against longstanding systemic shortcomings. In this context, he proposed that, after the 2027 elections, the roles of minister and MP should be made incompatible, with ministers’ parliamentary seats to be filled by the runner-up candidate for the duration of their tenure in the Cabinet, alongside a simultaneous enhancement of the role of Members of Parliament.
