PM Mitsotakis visits the Athens Nursing Home

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday visited the Athens Nursing Home and exchanged Easter wishes and gifts with the elderly residents and staff. Mitsotakis spoke with the residents, who thanked him for the upgraded care now provided by the institution, as well as for the actions taken to improve their daily lives.
The prime minister, accompanied by the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, was briefed by the president of the Nursing Home, Spiros Chamakiotis, on the work of the administration. According to government sources, in cooperation with the government, the administration is already moving toward financial restructuring of the institution and renovation of its facilities, both to further improve living conditions and to increase the number of elderly people it can accommodate.
The same sources noted that following renovation works carried out in recent years, the Nursing Home hosts 185 elderly residents-80 more than before. With the reconstruction of two additional wings planned by the administration, capacity is expected to increase by another 80 people. In the long term, once all projects are completed, the plan foresees accommodation for 500 elderly residents.
“I want to wish you from the bottom of my heart a Happy Easter. I want to tell you how glad I am to be here with you during these holy days, because I want my visit to be taken as a message of support both for the administration of the Nursing Home and for the ministry, for the truly important work being done here,” he said and added: “I can see from your smiles that you are in a safe place, a place where you are cared for, where you have a good time and feel that there are people who care about you. And we are a government that primarily cares for those who are most in need.”
Mitsotakis reassured that the government will secure the necessary funding for the implementation of essential projects and the upgrading of services so that the Athens Nursing Home becomes the best elderly care facility in the country.
On her part, Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou noted: “When we took office in 2019, we received only complaints about this historic institution. Now, not only are we no longer receiving complaints, but we have all joined forces so that each of us, from our respective roles-primarily the government and the administration in everyday operations-does everything possible to strengthen the institution, restore it to the standing it deserves, and of course to more than double the number of people who can receive care from it.”
