This has been a very difficult period,   not just for me, but for all Americans. What is needed is a calm examination of the facts of Watergate, and I am confident that with this the American people will come to understand that the trust placed in me has not been violated.

An important key in this process is a willing” ness to be open-minded,   as your editorial urged,   and I wanted you to know of my appre­ciation of your dedication to a responsible reportial approach.

I have been requested to reply to your August 6 telegrams to the President and Secretary Kissinger concerningUnited Statesactivity in connection withCyprus.

Since theCypruscrisis erupted in July, theUnited   Stateshas engaged in intense diplomatic activity aimed at pre­venting the spread of hostilities and promoting a just and lasting settlement.  These remain our objectives.  Condem­natory statements directed at one or another of the parties could serve only to widen the gulf between ourselves and our Greek and Turkish friends reducing our ability to be helpful. Moreover, we recognize that each party has legi­timate interests to protect and we will use our influence to see these interests honored.

Let me assure you that U.S.policy favors neither one party nor another„ We continue to support the sovereignty„ territorial integrity? and independence of Cyprus. We oppose both ^if enosis” and partition forCyprus. Our policy on this issue is consistent and has been publicly stated on numerous occasions.

The United Statesremains ready to play a more direct role, if this is what the parties concerned desire,so that the tragedy ofCyprus can be ended, and a way found for the two communities on the island to live together in harmony and security.

Παρίσταμαι νοερώς και συμμετέχω εις τας σημερινάς εκδηλώσεις προς τιμήν του εκλεκτού φίλου καί εθνικού αγωνιστού κ. Μπάμπη Μαρκέτου. Οφειλομένην τιμήν και δίκαιον έπαινον εκφράζω προς τον κ. Μαρκέτον, ο οποίος από των στηλών του “Εθνικού Κήρυκος” αγωνιζόμενος επί τριακονταετίαν προσέφερε πολλάς και πολύτιμους υπηρεσίας προς την ομογένειαν της Αμερικής και γενικώς προς το Ελληνικόν έθνος. Ο “Εθνικός Κήρυξ”, ο οποίος έχει βίον πέραν του ημίσεος αιώνος, φέρε ι κατά τήν τελευταίαν τριακονταετίαν τήν προσωπικήν σφραγίδα του Μπάμπη Μαρκέτου. Αποχωρών τώρα από τον “‘Εθνικόν Κήρυκα”, ο κ. Μαρκέτος δύναται να αισθάνεται ικανοποίησιν και υπερηφάνειαν διότι ειργάσθη πάντοτε με καθαράν συνείδησιν καί με όλας τας δυνάμεις του καί ανταπεκρίθη πλήρως εις την υψηλήν αποστολήν του. Η αποχώρησίς του αποτελεί ορόσημον δια τον ίδιον προσωπικώς και δια τόν “Εθνικόν Κήρυκα” . Άλλ’ αποχωρών καταλείπει εις την εφημερίδα του το ιδικόν του παράδειγμα καί υπόδειγμα. Και η εφημερίς, τήν οποίαν ο Μαρκέτος ανέδειξεν εις πολύπλευρον έπαλξιν ευγενών αγώνων καί προβολέα του Ελληνικού φωτός,  θα συνέχιση την έκδοσίν της και την πολύτιμον εθνικήν προσφοράν της, ακολουθούσα, την ωραίαν αγωνιστικήν παράδοσιν, την οποίαν εκείνος εδημιούργησε.

Η Κύπρος εύρεν εις το πρόσωπον του κ. Μπάμπη Μαρκέτου ένα πολύτιμον φίλον, θαρραλέον αγωνιστήν καί θερμόν συνήγορον των δικαίων της. Εις όλας τας δύσκολους ώρας του Κυπριακού Ελληνισμού, ο ^!!Εθνικός Κήρυξ” προέβαλε καί διεκήρυξε τα δίκαια του Κυπριακού Ελληνισμού καί συνήγειρε τήν ομογένειαν εις εκδηλώσεις συμπαραστάσεως και αλληλεγγύης. Και αι εκδηλώσεις αυταί αποτελούν πηγήν τονώσεως και ενισχύσεως του Κυπριακού Ελληνισμού δια την συνέχισιν του αγώνός του μέχρις ότου αποκατασταθούν τα καταπατούμενα σήμερον δίκαια του. Διαβιβάζω και διερμη­νεύω προς τόν κ. Μαρκέτον την βαθυτάτην εκτίμησίν μου καί την ευγνωμοσύνην των Ελλήνων Κυπρίων δι΄ όσα υπέρ της Κύπρου έπραξε. Τεκμήριον και έκφρασιν τιμής αποτελεί και η αναμνηστική αργυρά πλαξ, την οποίαν εκπρόσωπος μου θα επιδώση εις τον κ. Μαρκέτον, μετά των θερμότατων ευχών μου δι’ υγείαν σταθεράν και πάσαν παρά Θεού αγαθωσύνην .

Μετά χαράς πληροφορούμαι ότι ο “Εθνικός Κήρυξ” θα συνέχιση την έκδοσίν του υπό την διεύθυνσιν τώρα ενός εκλεκτού τέκνου της Κύπρου καί προμάχου των εθνικών δικαίων της, του κ. Ευγενίου Ρωσσίδη. Μετά συγκινήσεως ενθυμούμαι την τελευταίαν συνάντησίν μου μετά του κ. Μαρκέτου εις τα, γραφεία του “‘ Εθνικού Κήρυκος”  τον Νοέμβριον του 1974 καί την εκφρασθείσαν προς εμέ επιθυμίαν του όπως η εφημερίς του περιέλθη εις χείρας Κυπρίων δια να συνεχίσουν αι στήλαι της να αποτελούν βήμα από του οποίου να ακούεται η φωνή της αγωνιζομένης Κύπρου. Ιδιαιτέραν αισθάνομαι χαράν διότι η επιθυμία του κ. Μαρκέτου; η οποία ήτο και ιδική μου επιθυμία, επραγματοποιήθη. Εις ικανάς χείρας παραδίδει  την  αγωνιστικήν σκυτάλην ο κ. Μαρκέτος. Απευθύνω προς αμφοτέρους τον χαιρετισμόν της αγάπης μου, θα είμαι δε ευτυχής, εάν, αποδεχόμενοι πρόσκλησίν μου, επισκεφθούν την Κύπρον δια να δοθή ούτω η ευκαιρία εις τόν Κυπριακόν λαόν κα ι ε ι ς εμέ να εκφράσωμεν και εκ του πλησίον τα αισθήματα της οφειλομένης προς αυτούς τιμής.
