“Breathing Earth” is part of TREES, a pan-European initiative supported by Creative Europe, uniting seven major theater organizations around a shared vision of ecological awareness and artistic innovation. With climate change as its focal point, the production merges visual poetry, physical theater, and installation art to explore humanity’s broken connection to nature—through the eyes, voices, and memories of trees.
Directed by Nikolas Kamtsis, the founder of TOPOS ALLOU-AEROPLIO, the piece is
a deep ecological meditation. It combines elements of amazing inspired movement, and a poetic script devised collectively by an international team of artists, performers, and environmental researchers. The result is a performance that transforms theater into a ritual space—where trees “speak” of deforestation, fire, drought, resistance, and renewal.
The production’s scenography, designed to “breathe” with the landscape, used biodegradable materials, live soundscapes, and lighting that responded to natural shadows and wind.
“Breathing Earth is not just a play,” says Nikolas Kamtsis. “It is a call to rethink our place in the ecosystem. We have to listen again—especially to what doesn’t speak our language: trees, soil, silence.”
The Sommerwerft Festival, one of Europe’s leading open-air cultural festivals with a strong focus on social and environmental themes, is the perfect next stop for this traveling piece. As it is staged beside the river Main, “Breathing Earth” will adapt
once more to a new environment, continuing its life as a performance rooted in transformation and responsiveness.
