Article by PM Mitsotakis in Politico: ‘EU needs new tools to fight back against weaponised migration’

Europe is facing a fundamentally different security environment in which migration is not only a humanitarian and management challenge but can become a “insidious form of hybid pressure” that is instrumentalised by state and non-state actors, becoming a tool of geopolitical coercion, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an article that was published by Politico on Tuesday.
In the article, under the headline “Greece’s Mitsotakis: EU needs new tools to fight back against weaponised migration”, the Greek prime minister noted that recent events at Europe’s borders, such as the sudden influx of migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, have exposed the limitations of the current European framework for migration and asylum when faced with “sudden, massive and often coordinated movements of people”.
Mitsotakis called for “a dedicated European framework for situations of mass and instrumentalised migratory pressure,” that allows “temporary, proportionate and strictly controlled adjustments to standard procedures,” with full respect for European and international law.
