EU Council: Broad backing for Greek migration emergency mechanism initiative

The proceedings of the European Union’s Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg concluded constructively on Thursday, focusing on the proposal to institutionalize a European Emergency Mechanism, to address weaponised migration pressure.
During the proceedings, the Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris provided a detailed presentation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ proposal, which, according to a Ministry announcement, won the support of a broad majority of member states.
The new mechanism proposed by Greece aims to fill the structural gap in the existing framework, providing immediate operational and legal safeguarding at the EU’s external borders, when flows are used as a hybrid threat, according to the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
