Seven cruise operators to field home ports in Greece for 2021 season

Seven operators have chosen to a chosen a facility in Greece as a “home port” for the 2021 summer season, while more than 40 large cruise ships will ply Greek waters and visit roughly 45 destinations.

This situation in the cruise sector amid pandemic-related precautions and at the start of the official tourism season in the east Mediterranean country dominated a session of a national coordinating committee for cruises.

As expected, the port of Piraeus, the biggest and business port facility in Greece and one of the most important in the Mediterranean, has the “lion’s share” of cruise ship activity in the island-dotted nation.

Specifically, in terms of home ports, AIDA has chosen the international holiday island destination of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea; Norwegian Cruise Line will operate from Piraeus, Katakolo – near ancient Olympia on the southwest Greek mainland – and Corfu; Celestyal Cruises, from Piraeus and the near-Athens harbor of Lavrion; Tui Cruises from Irakleio (Heraklion) Crete; Silversea Cruises, with four vessels from Piraeus; Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean’s subsidiary, from Piraeus; Holland America Line from Piraeus, and MSC Cruises, also from Piraeus.
