SYRIZA has always promoted a fair, sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, Tsipras says in Nicosia

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday noted that his party “has fought both as Greece’s former government and as the country’s main opposition party to promote the prospect of a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.”

Tsipras, who is visiting Cyprus to attend a memorial event for the late political leader of socialist party EDEK Vassos Lyssarides, was speaking during a working lunch at Nicosia hosted by the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) Stefanos Stefanou.

He emphasized that “we will continue to fight these battles for the good of the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.”

Cyprus’ “new government and its new President (Nikos Christodoulides) are called upon to face important challenges,” Tsipras noted.

He also said he believes that now there is “a momentum concerning Greek-Turkish relations,” as “the deadly earthquake and the disaster in Türkiye changes the (political) climate.”

Welcoming Tsipras, Stefanou said that these times present problems and impasses “to which the Left is called upon to provide convincing answers by declaring itself present in the smaller and bigger struggles of our peoples for a better world, for a better society, for there to be peace in our long-suffering region.”

Tsipras is also expected to meet with newly elected Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. On Thursday evening, he is scheduled to attend the memorial for Lyssarides, organized by the mayor of Lefkares, Sofoklis Sofokleous.
