Education min calls on universities to carry out final exams online

Αthens,Greece.- Greek universities may hold finals examinations online, Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said on Thursday, following fears that sit-ins against private education will prevent students from sitting for examinations and therefore lose semesters.

Following protests and sit-ins in Greek cities to protest the decision to found private universities and concerns expressed by both students and parents, the minister notified university administrators (the Senate) that they can carry out the procedures online.

In his memo, Pierrakakis cites the relevant laws and regulations and said that the situation falls under “extraordinary circumstances in higher education facilities, where physical presence of the educational procedures facilitators is not feasible to conduct student examinations.”

Therefore, he said, university administrators can “take appropriate action to evaluate students through online means,” as long as private information of students and officials is guaranteed, and the process cannot be tampered with.
