DEF2026-Exarchou: The Vertical Corridor is a historic opportunity for Greece

Europe may find itself facing very high prices and shortages of natural gas next winter, which could have serious consequences for inflation and the cost of living of European citizens, Alexandros Exarchou, President and CEO of AKTOR Group and CEO of Atlantic SEE LNG Trade, said on Thursday speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum XI.

He assessed that in this case it is very likely that the EU will repeat the positive precedent of the pandemic, in which case it intervened and acted centrally, representing all member states.
He added, however, that the solution to the problem is long-term Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply agreements that ensure economic predictability and energy stability, and that Europe’s ambivalence on the issue of Russian gas is a mistake, which EU citizens will likely pay for next winter due to gas shortages and high prices.

In this context, he stressed that the Vertical Corridor is important for securing long-term contracts, while noting that its implementation will require further infrastructure, a second or even a third FSRU (floating LNG storage and regasification unit) in Greece, without state subsidies.

“The country’s geographical location offers a historic opportunity to function as an international energy hub. Greece now has a rare window of opportunity to become a pillar of geopolitical stability, which it must not under any circumstances miss, as it will not be available forever,” concluded Exarchou.
