Mitsotakis says Greece has definitively left crisis behind; is on path of steady growth, reforms

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in an interview on the “Today’s Battlegrounds” podcast hosted by H.R. McMaster, outlined his government’s economic, public administration and foreign policy record, saying Greece has definitively left its period of crisis behind and entered a path of sustained growth and reform.
He also addressed migration challenges, the need to strengthen European competitiveness and defence, Greece’s relations with Turkiye, and the country’s role in the international system, stressing the importance of strong alliances, fiscal discipline and a consistent strategic direction.
Mitsotakis said that when his government took office in 2019, Greece was still shouldering the burden of a severe economic crisis that had led to an unprecedented contraction in GDP, successive fiscal adjustment programs and heightened concerns over a potential exit from the eurozone.
He said the central objective since then had been to return the country to a path of sustainable growth while safeguarding fiscal stability and avoiding new macroeconomic imbalances.
The prime minister stated that Greece has pursued a policy of fiscal discipline combined with growth-oriented reforms, achieving a rapid reduction in public debt as a share of GDP, sustained primary surpluses, the creation of nearly 600,000 new jobs, a significant decline in unemployment and a marked increase in investment.
He noted that growth has been driven by both foreign and domestic investment, while the key remaining challenge is real income convergence and living standards relative to the rest of the European Union.
Mitsotakis added that restoring the country’s credibility in international markets and avoiding populist economic policies were critical conditions for maintaining economic stability and continuity.
