Abolition of cuts to survivor pensions resolves ‘a problem affecting thousands of families,’ PM Mitsotakis says

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis commented on the permanent abolition of cuts to surviving spouse pensions, which had been introduced as part of a pension system reform during the years of Greece’s debt crisis, in a social media post on Wednesday.

“On July 3 I had announced the legislative measure for the abolition,  of the Katrougalos cuts to survivors’ pensions. From today until Friday, the payment of the new pensions will have been completed. A total of 8,500 beneficiaries will see their pensions increase significantly, even returning to the levels they were at before they were subjected to cuts,” the prime minister said.

Mitsotakis also stressed that roughly 75,000 pensioners will not have to return any money retroactively, while the roughly 122,000 pensioners receiving two state pensions will be able to keep them as normal.

“Therefore, a problem affecting thousands of families is now being resolved once and for all, putting right a major social injustice. We said we would do it, and we are doing it,” he added.
