Acropolis Museum marks European Heritage Days with “Everyday stories in an ancient Athenian neighbourhood” 25-27/9

The Acropolis Museum is taking part in European Heritage Days 2026, with the presentation “Everyday stories in an ancient Athenian neighbourhood”.

How did the residents of the ancient neighbourhood spreading out beneath the Acropolis museum live? How did they meet their daily needs, furnish their homes, and worship their gods? What were the occupations of men, women, and children?

A 4,500-year history unfolds across the streets and house ruins of the excavation, as well as through 1,150 objects selected from the thousands left behind by people who were born, lived, and created in this corner of ancient Athens, according to a press release from the museum.

Museum archaeologists invite you to the excavation museum to discover the fascinating world uncovered during the construction of the Acropolis museum. A distant yet familiar world, protected beneath the shell of the modern museum, brings the past to life. The presentation aligns with this year’s pan-European theme: “Heritage in peril: Revive, resist, redesign.”

Inspired by the construction of the new Acropolis museum, an entire archaeological site was “embraced” by the modern building, protected, conserved, and highlighted, creating a “museum beneath the museum” and linking the stories of the gods of the Acropolis rock with those of the people who inhabited its slopes.

Admission / Cost: To secure your spot in the presentation, a general admission day ticket is required, along with showing your booking code at the ticket desks up to 20 minutes before the session starts. As part of this year’s European heritage days celebrations, on Sunday 27 September 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, admission to the Acropolis museum exhibition areas, including the excavation museum, will be free of charge.
