Education Minister Zacharaki visiting Canada: “.. the heart of the diaspora beats where the Church and our school are”

Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Minister Sofia Zacharaki on Monday commented on the enthronement of the new Greek Orthodox Archibishop of Canada Apostolos, which took place on Saturday local time, and her meetings with local officials and Greek expatriates, in a post in social media.

She noted that the enthronement marks the start “of a new chapter, with respect for the great legacy of former Archbishop of Canada Sotirios,” and noted that the new archbishop combines a desire to build new bridges with the diaspora with emphasis on “young people, experience and humility”.

Zacharaki arrive in Canada on Saturday and attended the enthronement ceremony with Foreignh Minister George Gerapetritis, representing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Greek government.

She also referred to their meetings with Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, the Greek and academic community, including both teachers and pupils.
“It becomes even more apparent here that the heart of the diaspora beats where the Church and our school are,” the minister said, noting that the government supports Greek-language education for hundreds of children and is proceeding to reopen the Toronto Education Coordination Office by the end of the year.
