Writers, artists: entries open for 67th Antipodes periodical and annual writing competition

The process is already underway for the 67th issue of the “Antipodes” literary periodical that will be out on 10 October and this issue will be devoted to articles and images that celebrate Greece’s 200 years of independence from Ottoman rule.

Despite all the difficulties posed by COVID-19 lockdowns last year, the 66th edition of the publication went ahead regardless of the difficulties. This year it will be the 48th year of continuous circulation for this influential publication by the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne (GACL).

As is usual each year, the issue will publish works submitted by GACL members and non-members of poems, short stories, studies, essays, book reviews and other literary works in Greek, English or in the Visual Arts. it will also feature the winning submissions to its annual literary competition (more details supplied below).

The work submitted must be original and must not have been published or promoted in another publication.

The literary works must not be longer than the limits defined in the competition rules: Poems – 100 verses (lines); short stories, studies and essays – 2,000 words; meditations – 800 words; book reviews and other reviews (including exhibitions, music, plays, films), – 1,000 words. Any submissions that exceed the specified limits will be rejected.

The deadline for submissions for “Antipodes” periodical is Friday, 25 June. Works must be submitted electronically as email attachments in Word document format and sent to gacl.editor@gmail.com

Literary competition

In addition the GACL is also launching its annual literary competition and the winning entries will be published in this years edition of the Antipodes periodical.

The literary competition is open to writers in Greek or English who reside in Australia and who are over 18 years of age. The two categories for the competition are Poetry and Short Story.

The work submitted must be original and must not been submitted to other competitions or have been published elswhere. All submissions, must be made by Friday, 25 June.

Participants may submit work in one or all the categories and in one or both languages with only one piece submitted to each category that they choose.

There will be a monetary prize for the winners of each category. The winners and those in second and third place will also receive commemorative award certificates and books.

The winning entries in each category and each language will be published in Issue 67 of the “Antipodes” periodical. The results of the literary competition will be announced at a special function that will include the launch of the “Antipodes” periodical in October.
