Nikos Androulakis becomes the new leader of KINAL

Nikos Androulakis is the new leader of the centre-left Movement of Change (KINAL) party, having garnered 67.8 per cent of the votes becoming the new leader of the third-largest group in Greek parliament.

Former socialist PASOK prime minister George Papandreou was left behind by 35 units in the showdown.

There were 206,000 party members who showed up to vote in the second round of the party’s elections, with Mr Androulakis lifting his support by 40,000 votes.

Born in 1979 in Heraklion, Mr Androulakis studied civil engineering at the Democritus University of Thrace where he also received a MSc in “New Materials and Environment”. He has worked in the tourism industry and as a civil engineer, he also gave courses in the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education.

In 2001, Mr Androulakis became a member of the Central Council of PASOK Youth and in 2008, he was appointed member of the National Council of PASOK. On 4 March 2013 he was elected member of the central political committee of PASOK, which on its first session on 14 March 2013 elected him the new political secretary.

He served as one of the two MEPs on PASOK’s Elia list in 2004, standing with the EU’s Progressive Alliance of Socialist and Democrats (S&D).

Mr Androulakis is now called to lead his party with 22 lawmakers in the 300-member Greek Parliament. The party gained 8.1 per cent of the vote in the last national elections, in July 2019.
