PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasizes priority on enhancing competitiveness in the primary sector

Kalavryta, Greece.-  Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the agricultural dairy cooperative of Kalavryta on Tuesday afternoon, and was given a tour of the cooperative’s feta cheese production unit by its president Pavlos Satolias.  The cooperative has been operating for 52 years and produces high-quality products.

A meeting followed at the cooperative’s offices, attended by the Minister for Rural Development and Food Lefteris Avgenakis, Regional Governor of Western Greece Nektarios Pharmakis and Mayor of Kalavryta Thanasis Papadopoulos.

“ Our goal is for our products to receive the prices they deserve, and in order to achieve this, we must, first and foremost, protect their quality and the market and consumers from any phenomenon of unfair competition. We have already taken significant steps in this direction. With the new legislation we will do even more,” the PM emphasized.

He added that the government has intervened significantly in the production cost regarding agricultural electricity. “We are committed to reassessing the Special Consumption Tax refund on diesel in 2025, considering your proposals, so that the real beneficiaries are the actual producers. This is the amount we have at our disposal, but this money must go to those who truly produce,” Mitsotakis said, emphasizing that “supporting the competitiveness of the primary sector is our central priority.”

Earlier, during a presentation held at the Kalavryta Town Hall, the Prime Minister was briefed on the upgrading and modernization projects of the Kalavryta ski resort that are either underway or scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. These projects have a total budget of 22,630,000 euros, financed by the National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA).

In addition, proposals were discussed for further development and expansion of the ski resort, with the aim of transforming it into a mountain multi-themed park that will serve visitors throughout the year.
