AHEPA Chapters in Greece “Boots on the Ground” project announced.

Supreme President George E. Loucas is making a request to all our chapters to donate funds to assist in the recovery and repair for the destruction caused by the wildfires in the Attica region of Greece where the death toll stands at 90 and damages in the billions of dollars.

The Supreme President expresses the thanks of the entire AHEPA family to everyone who has donated to date ($125,000 so far with more chapters donating)  for the tragedy facing those in Attica. Your generous contribution will be used to assist those who were affected by the wildfires. Nothing can bring back those who were tragically lost but the assistance will go a long way towards rebuilding their lives and community. AHEPA stands prepared to mobilize its vast network and deliver whatever is needed in crises whenever they occur.

Supreme President Loucas, after several phone calls to the Greek Government and US agencies, has announced a short-term program in response to the devastating wildfires in Greece.

The Supreme President expressed AHEPA’s concern to the mayor of Rafina, Mani, and the entire Greek government. “We are very appreciative of the actions and hard work AHEPA is currently promoting to assist Greece during this terrible time,” stated the Greek Embassy by phone.

As we approach this task, we remind you that this is the worst fire in all of Europe since before 1900. AHEPA has the proven history and reputation of aiding in times of need, such as raising more money from the sale of war bonds in WWII than any other entity. AHEPA is in a unique position of being able to leverage our grass roots membership and government contacts to get help where it is needed most. With over 30 AHEPA chapters in Greece alone, we are able to rely upon the structure of our organization to provide daily reports such as: current conditions; communications with U.S., Greek and local government officials; identifying the help needed most; prioritization of assistance; extent of injuries and ability of local hospitals to provide the necessary medical care and treatment.
Supreme President Loucas announces the AHEPA action plan:
  1. Communicate to our chapters — donations requested;
  2. Project Boots on the Ground 800+ member Ahepans mobilized from our 32 active chapters in Greece to investigate, report and offer assistance.
  3. Project UNITY FORUM designed to invite all Greek American organizations to join AHEPA in providing humanitarian aid and relief efforts.
  4. Partner with NGO’s to seek involvement on programs to provide aid;
  5. Reached out to our Partners in preparation to fly burn victims to the US for surgery with Emirates airlines & reached out to burn units in the U.S. to seek partnership in assisting burn victims.
  6. Accelerate, Maintain and Support AHEPA’s ongoing program of training Hellenic Firefighters.
  7. Purchase needed parts for firetrucks for Hellenic Firefighters, which were depleted from austerity measures.
  8. Continue to coordinate volunteer doctors to be available to go to Greece.
  9. Release immediate funds to the IOCC for much needed resources for cleanup.
  10. Reforestation.
AHEPA’s efforts are in full swing and funds are being collected.   AHEPA raised $100,000 in 48 hours. We are continuing to raise funds in preparation to assist. The Supreme President has announced that he will visit the affected areas on an official visit September 3-10.
AHEPA stands by its legacy to assist as it has for over 96 years. The Supreme President points to his acceptance speech: we have a duty, responsibility, in fact, an obligation not to forget our history, rather play it forward and aid when called upon, particularly where we are so well-vested as in Greece, the origin of the ideals we so value.
