Tripoli claims to UN on maritime borders violate Greece’s EEZ, diplomatic sources

Greece rejected a Libyan claim to the United Nations on the definition of Libya’s eastern maritime zones.

According to diplomatic sources on Thursday, Libya wrote to the UN secretary general on February 13 claiming maritime zones that Greece said, in a letter also to the UN official, affect Greek sovereign rights.

Greece’s permanent representative to the UN contested the claims in a letter to the UN head dated April 24, while diplomatic sources explained that the maritime borders claimed in maps appended to the Libyan letter are based on the Turkish-Libyan memorandum of 2019, which is legally invalid.  “In particular, the section of the eastern maritime border that the Tripoli government presents in the letter violates Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) according to the bilateral Greece-Egypt agreement on the EEZs of the two countries, which was signed on the basis of international law” on August 6, 2020, the sources said.

They added that Libya’s claims violate international law and threaten regional stability, while Greece’s permanent representative to the UN reiterated Greece’s commitment to resolving issues in good faith based on the international maritime law, as it has already done with Italy and Egypt.
