Mitsotakis: New bill to shield consumers from abusive practices for loans up to 100,000 euros

The “Neighbourhood Babysitters” platform made a strong debut, recording more than 13,500 visits on its very first day of operation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday in his weekly review of the government actions.
The program is offering an organized, safe and flexible childcare solution for infants and toddlers aged from two months to 2.5 years, he underlined.
Regarding banking and financial transactions, a draft law by the Ministry of Development is ready, aimed at protecting consumers from abusive practices in relation to loans of up to 100,000 euros. As previously committed, this legislation puts an end to hidden clauses and irregular practices. It introduces a cap on the total repayment amount of consumer loans, limiting it to between 30%-50% above the amount borrowed-broadly in line with the European average. These measures are expected to create a clearer and fairer framework for all parties, Mitsotakis stated.
The Greek premier also noted that the Ministry of Digital Governance launched an international tender for the procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of 1,000 fixed cameras at selected points across the road network. The project forms part of a broader road safety strategy aimed at reducing violations such as running red lights or speeding, which are frequent causes of accidents, he underlined.
Special mention was also made of the inauguration of the Athens branch of the University of Nicosia, located in Ellinikon, along with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. “It is one of the four non-state higher education institutions currently operating in Greece-licensed under strict criteria by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education-and offers degree programs in fields such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Psychology and Business Administration.”
He concluded his post by highlighting progress in Greece’s relations with Libya, stating in particular:
“Let me conclude with the progress achieved in our relations with Libya, as confirmed during the recent visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Tripoli. It was agreed that discussions at the level of Technical Committees concerning the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will move forward. Greece seeks to delimit the EEZ and continental shelf with the neighboring country, as states with opposite coasts, in full compliance with international law of the sea, as reflected in UNCLOS, and in line with the approach it has followed with other countries in the region. According to the agreed timeline, the next round of talks will take place in Tripoli in the near future. It was also agreed to enhance cooperation on other key issues, such as migration, while Greece will continue to present Libya’s positions in international organizations. Greece remains among the few countries that have established diplomatic relations at the highest level with both sides in Libya and will continue its consistent efforts toward a political solution that safeguards the country’s sovereignty, free from external interference.”
