Climbing the Peaks of the World: A Journey of Adventure, Perspective and Purpose

In Climbing the Peaks of the World, distinguished structural engineer, community leader, and author Emmanuel E. Velivasakis chronicles an extraordinary journey that begins in a small mountain village on the island of Crete and ascends to some of the highest achievements in engineering, leadership, and public service around the globe.

Through a rich collection of personal reflections, speeches, memoirs, and life experiences, Velivasakis invites readers to accompany him on a remarkable voyage spanning continents and decades. Along the way, he recounts his involvement in some of the world’s most challenging and iconic projects, including the recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks, the restoration of the US Capitol Dome, emergency responses to major earthquakes and natural disasters, and the design by his firm of record-breaking skyscrapers that redefine the world’s skylines.

Yet this book is far more than a professional autobiography. It is the story of perseverance, vision, and the enduring belief that no summit is beyond reach for those willing to pursue it with determination and integrity. From the rugged foothills of Crete to the boardrooms, construction sites, and centers of power across the world, the author shares the challenges, setbacks, sacrifices, and triumphs that shaped his life and career.

With the perspective of an engineer who helped build some of humanity’s most ambitious structures, Velivasakis explores the deeper foundations upon which a meaningful life is built. He masterfully weaves together themes of engineering, faith, family, culture, and the Greek diaspora, illustrating how these forces influenced his professional path and personal worldview. His experiences as a leader within the Greek American community reveal the importance of heritage, service, and identity in an increasingly interconnected world.

At its heart, Climbing the Peaks of the World is a meditation on the nature of achievement itself. The peaks described in these pages are not merely mountains climbed or towers constructed; they are symbols of the aspirations that drive human endeavor. They remind us that every summit reached reveals new horizons, and that the true value of the climb lies not only in the destination but in the journey itself.

About the Author

Mr. Velivasakis was born and raised on the island of Crete, and walks the world as a natural, self-forged ambassador of Hellenism. From the rugged soil of his island he set forth, carrying within him the stubborn breath of Crete, and journeyed to New York to study Civil Engineering at CCNY. There, he carved his path as a structural engineer and Managing Principal with the international firm of Thornton Tomasetti, leaving his mark on works that rise like modern mountains like the restoration of the US Capitol Dome in Washington, D.C., while his firm was involved in the design of the Petronas Twin Towers, Taipei 101, Shanghai Tower, and the soon to be 1001-meter tall Jeddah mega-Tower .In moments when the earth trembled and when human hands brought destruction-during the 1999 earthquake in Istanbul (Constantinople) and the dark day of September 11, 2001- he stood where help was needed. And from the ashes of Ground Zero, he labored in the rebirth of the Greek Orthodox church of Saint Nicholas, restoring not only stone, but symbol.
