Happy Father’s Day: How do we celebrate the special men in our lives?

In Greece, Father’s Day falls in June. But Greek dads in Australia follow the protocol Down Under, celebrating on the first Sunday of spring, falling this year on 4 September. Here, Melbourne dad Zarifis Zarifopoulos. Photo: Stacey Zarifopoulos

On this first Sunday of September 2022 Australians celebrate the father. And by extension your grandfather, father-in-law or whoever occupies that paternal figure place in your heart.

Greek dads are known for not sparing any expense in honouring their children, whether it be a birthday, or other occasion, or a life event as big as a wedding.

So, does the same apply for all us daughters and sons on Father’s Day?

If you celebrate Father’s Day (53%), according to a nationally representative survey, you are not showing your love with a purchased gift this Sunday.

However, the survey of 1,058 respondents conducted by comparison website Finder in August found that almost half (47%) of those would be giving their dad a present on Father’s Day.

If you fall under this cohort, you would have spent more than the average respondent if you forked out more than $108 to buy a gift.

And if you opted for clothing, a meal out or something for dad’s home or car, your present is one of the three most popular ones, according to the survey responses.

Meanwhile, the research reveals that 41% of us weren’t planning to celebrate Father’s Day at all.

And speaking of numbers, a separate survey from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) in collaboration with Roy Morgan shows that the percentage of Australians who were planning to buy a Father’s Day gift was down 4% on last year.

After all, finding meaning on a day like Father’s Day differs from person to person and expressing our love does not always translate in a gift, whether purchased or not.
