Dozens of migrants found naked by Greek border guards

Greek authorities have discovered a group of 92 migrants close to the country’s northern border with Turkey.

The migrants were all men, without any clothes and some reportedly had injuries.

Officers of EU border agency Frontex had also joined the Greek police operation which located the group.

It was not clear how and why the men had lost their clothes. According to Greek police, the migrants told the officers that they had been transported to Evros by Turkish authorities in three vehicles, where they boarded plastic boats to cross over to the Greek side through the river.

The migrants “had been abandoned completely naked and without any equipment,” the Citizen Protection Ministry said in its announcement on Saturday.

“Turkey continues to openly instrumentalise migrants, violate human rights, violate International Law,” the ministry said.

Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi tweeted that Turkey’s treatment of the migrants was a “shame for civilisation” and said that Athens expected Ankara to investigate the incident.

“We expect Ankara to investigate the incident and protect at last, its borders with the EU,” he stressed.
